COBRA or Marketplace after leaving work: compare the deadline and the network

COBRA can preserve familiar employer coverage. Marketplace plans can create another path, sometimes with income-based savings. The right choice depends on the whole household and the dates involved.

Compare the two timelines

Loss of employer coverage can create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. COBRA has a separate election period. Electing COBRA can affect when you may later move to Marketplace coverage, so compare both before the deadlines pass.

  • Last day of active employer coverage
  • COBRA election and payment deadlines
  • Marketplace Special Enrollment Period
  • Start date for the replacement plan

Compare total cost

COBRA often requires paying the full employer-plan premium plus an administrative charge. Marketplace premiums may reflect a premium tax credit based on projected annual household income. Deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket amounts can be very different.

  • Monthly premium
  • Deductible and copays
  • Maximum out-of-pocket limit
  • Employer-funded HRA or HSA effects

Do not assume the same doctors participate

Marketplace plans may use different networks than an employer plan from the same insurance company. Check each important hospital, doctor, specialist, prescription, and pharmacy under the exact plan name.

  • Local hospital system
  • Primary care and specialists
  • Prescription formulary
  • Out-of-area access

Use official enrollment channels

Marketplace eligibility and tax credits are determined through HealthCare.gov. COBRA rights and notices come from the employer plan administrator. Keep copies of termination and coverage documents.

Frequently asked questions

Select a question to see the answer.

Can I receive Marketplace savings while eligible for COBRA?

Eligibility can depend on whether COBRA was elected and on other facts. Complete the Marketplace application accurately and confirm the current rule.

Can I drop COBRA whenever I want and enroll in Marketplace coverage?

Voluntarily ending COBRA usually does not create a new Special Enrollment Period. Compare timing before electing or dropping coverage.

Do Marketplace plans cover pre-existing conditions?

ACA-compliant Marketplace plans cannot deny coverage or charge more because of a pre-existing condition.
