Medicare Supplement coverage for more predictable cost sharing
Medicare Supplement insurance works with Original Medicare to help pay certain deductibles, copays, or coinsurance. It does not replace Medicare, and it does not include outpatient prescription drug coverage.

How Medigap works
With Original Medicare as your primary coverage, a standardized Medicare Supplement policy can pay some of the remaining Medicare-approved cost sharing. You can generally use any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare, subject to the policy and Medicare's rules.
Standardized plans with the same letter provide the same basic benefits regardless of company, but premiums, underwriting practices, household discounts, and service can differ.
- Original Medicare remains primary
- A separate Part D plan is usually needed for prescriptions
- Premiums can change over time
- The best enrollment rights may be time-sensitive
Your open enrollment window
The federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally lasts six months and starts when you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, insurers generally cannot use medical underwriting to deny a policy or charge more because of health conditions.
Outside protected enrollment rights, an application may require health questions and can be declined. Mississippi rules and company practices should be checked for the specific situation.
Comparing Plan G and Plan N
Plan G and Plan N are common choices for people newly eligible for Medicare, but neither is automatically better. Plan G generally provides broader standardized cost-sharing coverage. Plan N can have a lower premium in exchange for certain office or emergency-room copays and possible Part B excess charges.
A comparison should look at current premium, expected increases, provider use, and your comfort with variable costs.
Keep prescriptions separate
Medigap policies sold today do not include prescription drug coverage. A stand-alone Part D plan should be evaluated separately around your medications and pharmacy preferences.

Frequently asked questions
Select a question to see the answer.
Is Medigap the same as Medicare Advantage?
No. Medigap supplements Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive Medicare-covered benefits through a private Medicare-approved plan.
Does Medicare Supplement include prescriptions?
No. Modern Medigap policies do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. A separate Part D plan is usually considered.
Can I change Medigap policies anytime?
You may apply at any time, but outside guaranteed-issue rights the insurer may use medical underwriting and can decline the application.
Are benefits different between companies?
Benefits are standardized by plan letter, but premiums, discounts, underwriting, rate history, and customer experience can differ.
