Protect the paycheck
Disability income coverage for the years your household depends on work
Health insurance helps with medical bills. It does not replace the income that pays the mortgage, groceries, utilities, and retirement contributions when illness or injury keeps you from working.

Measure the income at risk
The conversation starts with monthly obligations, emergency savings, employer benefits, business overhead, and how long the household could operate without a paycheck. Coverage is then sized around the gap rather than an arbitrary benefit amount.

- Existing short-term and long-term disability benefits
- Waiting period before benefits begin
- Benefit period and monthly amount
- Definition of disability and occupational duties
- Savings available for the gap
Policy definitions matter
Disability policies differ in how they define disability, whether benefits are tied to your own occupation or another occupation, how partial disability is handled, and which exclusions or limitations apply. Premium alone does not show those differences.
An illustration is not the policy. Review the contract, riders, exclusions, and underwriting decision before accepting coverage.
Business owners have additional gaps
A personal disability policy protects household income. It may not pay business rent, payroll, or other overhead. Business overhead expense, key-person, or buy-sell funding strategies may be relevant in some situations and require separate analysis.
- Personal income replacement
- Business overhead obligations
- Key-person exposure
- Ownership transition commitments
Underwriting is part of the process
Insurers may review health, occupation, income, duties, hobbies, and existing coverage. Approval, benefit amount, exclusions, and premium are determined by the carrier. No coverage is in force until the insurer approves it and required conditions are met.

Frequently asked questions
Select a question to see the answer.
Does health insurance replace income?
No. Health insurance addresses covered medical costs. Disability income insurance is designed to replace a portion of earned income after a covered disability.
How long is the waiting period?
Policies offer different elimination periods. A longer waiting period may reduce premium but requires more savings to bridge the gap.
Can self-employed people qualify?
Often, yes. The carrier will review occupation, duties, income documentation, health, and other underwriting information.
Is disability coverage guaranteed to pay?
No. Benefits depend on the policy definition, covered cause, exclusions, proof of loss, and the insurer's claim decision.
